EU iPads can use alternative app stores from Sept 16.

Apple allows third-party app stores on iPad starting September 16.

This change is in line with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the EU.

iPadOS is one of the Apple products categorized as core platform services.

The addition of iPadOS by the EU Commission is due to lock-in effects for business users.

Alternative app stores and browser engines will be supported by iPadOS 18.

In Europe, five third-party app stores are now open for iOS.

Alternative stores can only host apps that have been notarised by Apple.

Epic Games launched its iOS app store in the EU for Fortnite.
